Dublin is both the largest city and capital of Ireland. Founded as a Viking settlement, the city has been Ireland's primary city for most of the island's history since medieval times. Today, it is an economic, administrative and cultural centre for the island of Ireland and has one of the fastest growing populations of any European capital city. The city has a world-famous literary history, having produced many prominent literary figures, including Nobel laureates William Butler Yeats, George Bernard Shaw and Samuel Beckett. Other influential writers and playwrights from Dublin include Oscar Wilde, Jonathan Swift and the creator of Dracula, Bram Stoker. It is arguably most famous, however, as the location of the greatest works of James Joyce.
Trinity College
Trinity College is one of Ireland's leading historical sites attracting in excess of half a million visitors every year. The Book of Kells is by far the college library’s most famous book. The Book of Kells was written around the year 800 AD and is one of the most beautifully illuminated manuscripts in the world.
National Museum of Ireland
Opened in 1890, the National Museum of Ireland, Kildare Street contains artifacts dating from 7,000 BC to the 20th Century. The National Gallery of Ireland was founded by an Act of Parliament in 1854 and opened to the public in 1864. In addition to the national collection of Irish art, the Gallery houses the national collection of European Old Master paintings.

Dublin Castle is the heart of historic Dublin. The Castle stands on the ridge on a strategic site at the junction of the River Liffey and its tributary the Poddle, where the original fortification may have been an early Gaelic Ring Fort.
