King Robert the Bruce

The Kintyre golf course enjoyed a major re-brand in 2017 and reopened as the King Robert the Bruce Golf Club.

Named after the famous King of Scotland, Robert the Bruce was a fierce warrior who led Scotland to independence at the violent Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. He was born in July 1274 at Turnberry Castle, and these days the historic Turnberry Lighthouse stands amongst its scenic ruins.

About King Robert the Bruce Golf Course – Brief history

  • Golf has been played here for more than a century
  • The first course on the site was laid out by Lord Ailsa, who commissioned Willie Fernie to design an 18-holer in 1901
  • No 2 course arrived eight years later, renamed The Ailsa, a course that was seriously damaged during World War Two
  • Martin Ebert and Donald Steele re-worked elements of the old Arran course, dating back to 1954, to create the 18 hole Kintyre course
  • In July 2014 Donald Trump bought the course
  • Martin Ebert was brought in again for another redesign, retaining the skeleton of the old layout on the lower holes, opening up the gorse, widening the fairways and cutting down the rough while increasing the greens' protection
  • Ebert has also introduced more variety, with wetland and sandy wasteland. The old Baines Hill holes are completely new, reversing the direction of the original layout to deliver amazing views of iconic Turnberry lighthouse, Ailsa Craig and the Isle of Arran
  • The re-named Kintyre course, Robert the Bruce, opened for business in June 2017 and is already proving a huge hit with players from around the globe

Featured holes – Hole 9

Play King Robert the Bruce golf course and you'll discover a supreme challenge in the shape of the brand new cliff-edge ninth hole, a dramatic piece of play demanding tricky choices: should you aim heroically for the green way over the chasm, or head further along the fairway and wedge your shot into the high green? The fairway narrows before the approach shot, flying over a sandy wasteland and rated a stroke index 2, despite the prevailing wind being behind you from tee to green.

Known for its fantastic new layout

When we arrange your tee time at Robert the Bruce golf course, you’ll experience a much-improved game compared to the old Kintyre course. The refit has transformed this resort into a 36 hole golfing destination with genuine substance. Its reputation is growing fast thanks to the bunkering, which is exceptional. The opening seven are all rock solid links holes, the turf on the fairways is nice and firm, and the greens offer real putting joy. Best of all, the new holes high on Baines Hill are proper pulse-racers.
