The club was founded in 1887 and its amateur championship started a year later, making it one of the oldest tournaments of its type in the world. It was awarded its Royal title in 1902 and forms a part of the ‘golden triangle’ of links courses in Kent, adjacent to Royal Cinque Ports and Prince’s Club.
The course cleaves to the coastline of the bay of Sandwich and is set among some of the most imposing duneland of any links course in the UK. Champions at this venue include golfing greats like Henry Cotton, Bobby Locke and Greg Norman.
The layout of the course hasn’t changed much in its 131-year history - every hole plays in a different direction to the previous one, and together with the frequent winds off the coast, offer that extra frisson of uncertainty to the golfing aficionado as they place their ball on the tee.
Royal St.George’s boasts some beautiful views out to sea over the sand dunes, and there is no more beautiful sight than the sun setting over the English Channel after a full and satisfying day’s golf.
Featured hole
Royal St.Georges is regarded as quite the challenge and one notable quality it possesses is variety. No two holes are alike, so it is quite a challenge to pick out one in particular to highlight. However, the par 4 fourth plays into the prevailing wind and in addition to its daunting 470 yards, is especially well-known for having the deepest and tallest bunker, carved into the side of an enormous dune. Add to that, “The Maiden”, as the par 3 sixth is known, with its craggy landscape and massively challenging approach to the green, and you have a challenge that any self-respecting golfer can’t resist!
A special place indeed
The great writer, Tom Doak, summed up Royal St.George’s elegantly and succinctly;
“Sandwich (as Royal St.George’s is also known) has the four prerequisites of great (course) architecture...Challenging holes, beautifully crafted greens and bunkers, a character of its own, and stunning scenery.” The clubhouse is a feature in itself. Steeped in history, it boasts an open fire during the winter months and a pictorial history of the club displayed on its walls. It also offers one of the finest golf lunches in the British Isles, often with a choice of several different roast meats. All in all, you couldn’t ask for a more perfect example of traditional British charm, style and hospitality.
