A golfer’s review of Scotland's North East

25/11/2019

The North East of Scotland needs no introduction to golfers. It boasts several of finest Links courses in the country all within close proximity to each other and would make a great 3-day extension to any Programme you may be interested in.

CRUDEN BAY GOLF CLUB

Cruden Bay was once a holiday destination for the British elite from past Prime Ministers to some of the wealthiest people in the country. Over 100 years ago it had one of Scotland’s largest (365 bedroom) and luxurious Hotels and a Championship Links, the hotel made from Pink Granite it was a stunning piece of architecture.

However, 100 years on the Grand Hotel is gone and Cruden Bay golf club clubhouse stands in its place.

Cruden Bay

The golf course meanders between large sand dunes and several cliff tops, this is links golf in its truest form. Several of the holes run along the beach with the rest of the course having sea views from tee and or green.

There is also a lovely 9-hole course which runs inside the Championship course which can be used by visitors as a warm up prior to the round. There is also a covered bay practice range, short game area and putting green all within 100 yards of the clubhouse.

Below is the gorgeous Par 3 4th hole - one of the signature holes on the course.

Cruden Bay certainly has something for everyone, and we would highly recommend this to you as a must play golf course.

TRUMP INTERNATIONAL & MCLEOD HOUSE

Opening in 2013 Trump International Aberdeen can be described as arguably one of the best new courses in the world. Built on the Balmeddie estate the course has been carved through some of the UKs largest sand dunes, some which are over 150ft in height. This makes for breath-taking tee shots none more than tee shot on hole 2, as you can see below in this stunning image.

Trump Aberdeen

They have almost amphitheatre like golf holes and When u play here you feel like you’re the only person on the course.

The course has 6 different teeing ground options so can cater for golfers of all abilities, we recommend you put an extra sleeve of 3 in the back as although the fairways are generous when missed lost balls will happen.

The newly restored Mcleod House and Lodges are stunning in every way, with no details missed.

Mcleod House

The incredible rooms were beautiful and grand and had some the nicest bathrooms we have seen in any property. With the new addition of a Beauty retreat which offers many therapies and a 7-person hot tub situated in the courtyard it’s the perfect location to relax in the evening and stare at the stars.

Trump International is without doubt one of the Best and a Venue all golfers Need to play.

THE MARCLIFFE HOTEL & SPA

Aberdeen’s only 5* hotel, The Marcliffe Hotel located 10 mins from the city centre is in ideal location for any golfer playing in the North East. It’s no surprise then that the hotel is often used by many high-profile guests such as Prime Ministers, Rock stars and golfing legends Like Tom Watson, Colin Montgomerie to name a few.

Marcliffe Hotel

First thing you will notice about the Marcliffe is the relaxed atmosphere it possesses, immediately you feel at home, the room are lovely and spacious and are ideal for golfers.

Marcliffe Room

There is lots of open space within the hotel to sit and relax whilst taking in some of the incredible memorabilia Mr Spence (owner) has doted all around the hotel, none more in his snooker/golf room in the basement.

The Marcliffe Hotel also has a lovely spa and gym, which has lots of treatments to suit golfers and of course non-golfers, the hotel really does suit everyone and one we highly recommend.

We are blessed to have so many incredible championship golf courses in Scotland and the north East boast 3 of the finest. Add these stunning Hotels and properties, make this your next golfing trip.
