Princes Golf Club
Prince’s Golf Club offers a 27-hole Championship Golf Course which runs along the beautiful and imposing South East coastline. Prince’s is steeped in golfing history. The legendary Gene Saracen won The Open Championship there in 1932, and his words, ‘Britain’s finest course.” pay testament to its qualities.
The club is lesser known than its neighbour, The Royal St. George’s, but despite that, it certainly doesn’t lack quality and charm.
Although the course suffered wartime damage (as did many in this region) a new layout of 27 holes plus two practice holes was redesigned and restored by Sir Guy Campbell and John Morrison in 1950. The 27 holes cover three areas - Shore, Dunes and Himalayas (names which are pretty self-explanatory!) each starting and finishing beside the clubhouse. If you’re a links lover, the superb all year round conditions will suit you down to a tee!
Royal Cinque Ports
The Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club is a links course located in the very south east corner of England. Steeped in tradition, it is well-known for its imposing sand dunes, rapid undulating fairways, superbly-tended greens and a classic out-and-back route. The course was one of four Final Open Qualifying venues between 2014 and 2017.
The last seven holes, around the village of Deal, where you play into thebiting prevailing South-Westerly winds from the English Channel make it a stern challenge for any true links aficionado. Those in the know comment that a round here never fails to be characterful, fun and exciting.
Players need to drive well and carefully plot their route over the course, especially with approach shots, as the greens hide their undulations. As one anonymous reviewer posted, “A well struck recovery can bring fleeting joy...Which cannot be said for many sand traps on old links.” Finally, the winds and rain can be monstrously challenging, so consider yourself warned if you’re up for the challenge!
Royal St Georges
Royal St Georges is a name to conjure with in the annals of golfing history. This links course on the Kent coast has a unique place in the history of golf, as in 1894, the British Open Championship was first played outside Scotland. In total there have been 14 Open Championships played at St George’s, more than any course outside of Scotland and return in 2020 will see the fifteenth, when the Club hosts the 149th Open Championship.
The club was founded in 1887 in a setting of wild duneland. Many holes feature blind or partially blind shots and the layout is not a traditional one as such, as each nine is broadly circular, a loose figure of eight. Royal St George’s requires confidence and accurate driving to avoid sticky situations, such as the UK’s tallest and deepest bunker on the 4th.
Royal St. George’s is considered one of the true greats in world golf. It is an incredibly popular golf course and it is easy to see why. The coastal views are truly spectacular and it blends naturally into its beautiful surroundings.
