Golf history in the Northeast & Highlands

The history of Highland golf is rich in legendary names: Old Tom Morris, James Braid, Donald Ross, Archie Simpson and more have all created magical golf courses in the region, everywhere from the stunning Moray coast to the remote northernmost Highlands. This is home to Royal Dornoch and Nairn, and it's the location of the relatively new Castle Stuart Golf Links, another star in the making on the international golf scene.

Royal Dornoch dates back to 1877 and originally featured just nine holes. When Old Tom Morris saw the lay of the land for the first time in 1886 he declared it the finest linksland he's ever seen, and the remarkable course he created in response to the land remains much the same to this day. Since then the great John Sutherland, JH Taylor, George Duncan and Donald Ross have all played their part in perfecting this highly respected world class golfing challenge.

The Nairn golf course is just as illustrious, founded in 1887 and designed by the brilliant Archie Simpson on the low-slung links of the magnificent Moray Firth. Old Tom Morris also managed to influence Nairn, extending the course to the west. Twenty years later James Braid improved the tees and bunkers and brought new greens into play. He also oversaw Ben Sayers' later contribution. And CK Cotton finally sealed the deal with some fine-tuned adjustments.

Castle Stuart links is a beauty, too. Designed by Mark Parsinen and Gilbert Hanse, it opened its doors in 2009 but is already a top 60 member of Golf Magazine’s Top 100. It famously holds the honour as the first Highland golf course to host a European Tour event, the Scottish Open.

Whichever of the eight classic courses you intend to play on your next golf vacation, the Highlands in all their glory plus the sporting challenges you overcome will steal your heart.
