Gullane No. 1

If you're looking for exceptional golfing, you’ll find it at the Gullane No. 1 course. Gullane No.1 has a long and illustrious history of hosting world-class national and international championship golf events, most recently the Local Final Qualifying for the 2013 Open Championship at neighbouring Muirfield.

Thanks to the famous Gullane Hill, this course is a great deal hillier than most Scottish links courses. As a result it provides an excellent test of golf. All three courses at Gullane share the same wonderful turf, enjoy superb greens all year round and offer spectacular, panoramic views from the summit. From up there you can clearly see the ancient volcanic plug Bass Rock, smothered with sea birds and guano, plus the beautiful Isle of May, the scenic Ochil Hills, Firth of Forth, the Lammermuir Hills and far off into lovely Fife.

Carved into the ancient links turf, famed for its lush beauty, you'll find plenty of pot bunkers, wispy grass and beautiful smooth-running greens, all of which ensure that the course is a unique challenge for serious golfers.

Featured hole – Hole 5, a legendary par 4 to battle with

Hole five, Murray's Hill, is a particularly taxing challenge for those who play Gullane No 1. After the narrow green at the fourth you climb to the course's best-rated hole, number five, a satisfyingly tricky par 4 that’s a full 436 yards long. Yes, it's easily long enough for a par 4. But beware – there's a severe dogleg left, which catches slicers out time after time. Slice your drive and you'll only end up adding yardage to the hole. The second shot is also uphill, leaving many approach shots short. If you want to see what you’re made of, Gullane’s treacherous course is the place to do it.

Known for its beauty and truly superb golfing challenges

Gullane No. 1 combines the sheer beauty of the East Lothian coast – all 43 glorious miles of it - with exceptional play. It’s a course you won't want to leave in a hurry. Make a par 4 on the 5th hole and you can clap yourself on the back for  a job extremely well done. Because it lies just ten miles from the capital, Edinburgh, it's also very popular with players who also want to explore the nation's historic, vibrant capital.
